Ted Lasso Superpower

I recently re-watched a Season 1 episode of “Ted Lasso” in which Ted proclaims, “For me, success is not about the wins and losses. It's about helping these young fellas be the best versions of themselves on and off the field.” Over the course of the show’s narrative arc, he proves out that his optimistic approach wins out over more traditional “commander” coaching styles.

This is the Believing superpower in action. This form of confidence comes from a hopeful place, one that is optimistic about the future. This belief powers the ability to live free from fear; positive intent is the lens through which you see everyone and every situation. A values orientation, idealism, and a sense of greater purpose underpin motivations so as to never lose sight of what truly matters. Principled, wise, and intuitive, this superpower focuses on the best outcome, even when it’s not easy or convenient, and seeks a meaningful, purpose-filled path that leaves others and the world a better place.

What can do you do to channel the Believing superpower? There are 3 ways to start:

Practice positive intent. Think of someone you might be struggling to relate to and ask the question, “What positive qualities do I see in this person? What are their good intentions toward me or the situation we face?” Applying this lens of positive intent empowers you to see the best in others and to work through problems to create solutions together.

Write a gratitude list. Seeing the best in things begins with a thankful appreciation for what you have, tangible and intangible.

Let go. The Believing superpower can most help when dealing with losses that have an element of finality—a breakup, a job loss, the death of a loved one. Take a situation or relationship and reflect on the balance sheet of holding on versus letting go. See the positives of letting go, reflect on the wisdom you gained, and look ahead to better days to come. As Ted Lasso said to a player reeling from a misstep, “You know what the happiest animal in the world is? It’s a goldfish. It’s got a ten-second memory.”

How would your life change if you wielded the Believing superpower?
